Six Ely Runners set off for the Tarpley 20 on Sunday 28th February. For some, including John Manlow, it was the last planned road race before VLM.
With a number of regulars unavailable for this race, Ely Runners only just managed to rustle up a skeleton team of 10.
On the January 24, three Ely Runners, John Manlow, Miranda Reynolds and Ian Blatchford took part in the Folksworth 15, a 2 lap race of 15 miles. This race, along with the Stamford 30K and the 20 mile races at Tarpley and Wymondham are widely used by local runners as marathon preparation for VLM in April.
After the somewhat feeble previous result at Hinchingbrooke, finishing 15th out of 16, the March performance just had to be better, and thankfully it was.
Although the number of Ely Runners running in the County Championships on a wet, cold, January day in muddy conditions was quite modest, several individuals did well to achieve county championship medals, notably in some of the youngest and oldest age groups.
