Saturday the 13th of May 2017 saw the Waterbeach Running Festival in aid of the Waterbeach Toddler Playgroup Charity. The races featured on the day were a 2K Fun Run, a 100m toddle, a 5K race and a 10K race.
The 10K race consisted two laps of Waterbeach Barracks; traffic free, pleasant enough surroundings, and on concrete with the odd pot-holed area with light stones and rubble.
The weather was on the warm side but pleasant, with a light head on wind as runners headed back towards the starting point.
173 runners completed the race. The first gentleman in taking the 1st position was Jack Blaiklock of Thames Hare & Hounds with a time of 00:34:53.
Nine Ely runners took part in the 10K…
Karl Bedingfield, 14th – 41:10.
Alison Stewart, 15th – 42:06.
Andy Bonner, 22nd – 44:09.
Justin Smith, 28th – 45:08.
Amy Southward, 29th – 45:10.
Louise Bonner, 50th – 48:03.
John Glover, 58th – 48:47.
Robert Haggart, 61st – 49:06.
Claire Haggart, 165th – 58:27.
The 5K race involved one lap of the barracks.
The first male was Tony Bacon of Saffron Striders with a time of 17:14, and the first female, Yvonne Scarrott, came in 6th place (21:20).
Then we had a superb family affair! Sam Evans, 15th (24:02); Jon Evans, 55th (34:51) and Zoe Evans, 60th (36:15). Finally, we have the superb Sophia Evans of Ely Runners Juniors, who completed the 2K race in 11:45 (6th in her age category in what was a big race!)
This event can only get more popular – it was well-organised and marshalled, and with some family entertainment laid on. Medals for all.
